Wipe Your Feet; The Value of Mats
An average family of four tracks approximately 24 pounds of dirt into the house every month. This dirt not only gets scattered around the house, but also causes the most damage to the finish on floors. With mats outside and immediately inside the entryways, you may trap as much as 80% of the dirt--- that’s nearly 20 pounds of dirt that doesn’t have to be cleaned.

Cleaning the mats are as important as having them. Once a mat becomes full of dirt, it acts as a storage area for soil, which will be transferred into the house. To avoid this transfer of dirt, clean mats often.

To clean a mat, beat it to knock dry soil loose, then vacuum both the top and back of the mat.

The Basics of Floor Care
1. The value of dust mopping and sweeping.
Sand and dirt are tiny rocks. When left on the floor, foot traffic will grind these rocks into the finish. The effect is the same as using sandpaper! Once the floor finish becomes damaged, the floor itself will be damaged.
2. Wet Cleaning
While a floor may look clean after sweeping, soil remains embedded in tiny, microscopic holes in the finish. If the soil is not removed, it works itself deeper into the finish where it may cause the floor to become discolored and dull.

When mopping the floor, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, especially regarding the amount of cleaner needed. Too little soap in a bucket of water leaves dirt on the floor. Too much soap leaves a sticky residue, which actually attracts more dirt, making the floor dirtier then when you started. The correct formula collects dirt off of the floor, and then suspends it in the bucket, keeping it from being deposited back on the floor. Generally, the manufacturer will recommend swabbing the floor, then going back and rinsing with clean water. Swabbing with soap loosens and removes the dirt--- don’t rush this process, let the cleaning agent do its work and loosen up the dirt. Rinsing with water removes excess dirt and any residue from the cleaner.

The secret to a clean floor is using the correct amount of soap and keeping the mop and the water clean. Once the water becomes dirty, replace it with fresh water and a fresh solution. When you use either a dirty mop or water, you are simply removing dirt from the floor, into the bucket and back onto the floor.
